Reading Children

Vowels and Consonants

This children's video introduces kids to vowels and consonants and explains how they are used to create syllables in an English word. The purpose of this video is to move children toward an understanding of the rules behind pronuciation so that they can reduce larger words to a smaller set of rules that they can master.

In the video, we talk about how syllables are formed around vowel sounds. The main vowel sound of a syllable is called the "nucleus" of the syllable and it can have consonant sounds on either side of it. A consonant sound that comes before the nucleus is called the "onset," and a consonant sound that comes after it is called the "coda." Syllables with a coda are called "closed," and those without are called "open."
