The main vowel sound of a syllable is called the "nucleus" of the syllable and it can have consonant sounds on either side of it. A consonant sound that comes before the nucleus is called the "onset," and a consonant sound that comes after it is called the "coda." Syllables with a coda are called "closed," and those without are called "open."
