You can send messages to computers in your network or in a domain that you specify. I don't know about IP addresses.

The computers that you send messages to must have the Messenger service running. You can turn on the Messenger service in the Services panel.

Here's the wikipedia page that will give you more explicit directions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messenger_service.

Windows Vista and Server 2008 do not support Net Send. There are also sometimes problems with Windows XP SP 2.

you can do ip adresses aparrently. i will just have to tell the person what to do or a batch file th do it for them Wink. i have no idea why i learned to program batch files but its prety cool. i am makeing an instant messager for my friends. but they will need instruction unless the batch file can open the service manager and activate messanger for them. but i have no idea.

I'm a fan of DOS myself, so don't worry.

If you want to write an instant messenger for your friend, you should program it in C++ or another language like that. You can't use Net Send to communicate back and forth; as far as I know it just sends a message out to certain users or computers. It's like sending out a memo; there's no two-way communication afaik.

I think you could even find some 3rd party or open source library that will help you write an instant messenger. I'm assuming here that by "instant messenger" you mean chatting like Skype, Windows Messenger, and the like.

I would be curious to know how you'd write an instant messenger client like that. If and when you find out how, it'd be great if you'd post it back here.

Thanks. Happy Coding --

Yes, you'll need a server to do an IM, but one of your computers can act as the server and client at the same time.

About the Messenger services problem: what is the operating system of each of your machines?
