The Holy Father delivered an allocution addressed to the US bishops of Regions VII -- IX, in the context of their ad limina visits.

The focus of his remarks was the contemporary crisis of marriage and the family, and, more generally, of the Christian vision of human sexuality.

Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is injurious to them is injurious to society itself" (Sacramentum Caritatis, 29).
